Drawing Connections

"Tell me a fact and I'll learn. Tell me the truth and I'll believe. But tell me a story and it will live in my heart forever."

- Indian Proverb

Description

Beyond the facts lies knowledge. In this interactive session, you will experience an innovative technique to draw connections among various pieces of information represented as digital media transforming facts to knowledge.

Sir Ken Robinson (TED)

Creativity is as important as literacy!

Kids will take a chance. If kids don't think that the know it, they give it a go (see Ruby). They are not afraid of being wrong. (Being wrong does not mean you are creative. However, unless you are not afraid of being wrong, you cannot be creative. If you are not prepared for being wrong, you will never come up with innovative ideas.)

All Kids are born artists, the problems is to remain an artist while growing up. (Picasso)

All Kids are born creative, and most get educated out of it. (Think of the way businesses are run - afraid of making mistakes)

Education (through out the world) has a common hierarchy - Math & Language at the top, Humanities, and then arts at the bottom. Main purpose of education is to produce university professors. Most profs live in their heads - their bodies are mere transportation devices to get their heads to meetings (evidence - see the dance following a ed conference).

UNESCO??

More people will be graduating from college in the next few?? years than in all years in the past. So what is a degree worth? Process of academic inflation

Intelligence

DIVERSE (visually, sound, kinesetic, cognitive)

DYNAMIC (interactive,

DISTINCT (

Where do people find their creative ideas? Interview folks whose job is to be creative... how did they do in school?

A girl was having trouble in school. An insightful teacher called in the girl's parents for a meeting. Durinng the meeting, he asked to speak to the parents outside leaving the girl in the room with a radio on. Outside, they looked in on the girl and she was moving to the music. The teacher said that what the girl needs is to be enrolled in a school that teaches dance. She needs to move to think. The girl went on to be the correogro. for CATS.

If a man speaks his mind in a forest and no women hears him, is he still wrong.

New world, we don't need organizations to be organized

Ideas are flowing up from consumers to industries

Radical innovation == uncertainy

Consumers create the use --- Mountain Bikes, Telephony, SMS

Patent - inventors know what the idea will be used for, but the new world, customers will determine what it will be used for. See Peter Druker - listen and react to customers.

Think about bringing idea to "bosses"

Bill comes to his boss with a radical new idea but cannot predict its potential revenue much less how it will be used but it will be really big in the future.

Judy comes to her boss with an incremental improvement to an existing product and has research that predicts revenue potential.

Hard to spot emering new markets - they are the growns for passionate users. Rap music would never have come from big companies, it came from the kids.

Find people who really love what they are doing (ametures) but at work they do not feel appreciated or making a difference.

Astronomy - 20 years ago, only profressional astronomers could , now users can be producers.

World A - Traditional - Big companies developing products pushing them out to passive users. MARKETING / SHAPING & CONTROLING THE MESSAGE

World B - Modern (internet) - Linux, Wikipedia, open-source

Struggle between these two worlds (A will do anything to do away with B - e.g. patents and copyrights are being used to stiffle distribution of ideas). Remember discussion of a case-study about Red Hat in MSIS.

Newspapers - only place for users to participate is in the letters to editor or maybe in the op-ed. Now we have blogs, shock horror where users can write. Users don't want to be the journalists, they just want a voice.

Challeges - can we survive with just volenteers?

New organizational models where the closed (traditional) organizations will openup.

EXCELLENT

Timothy Chan - Guy in China started a gamming company. He has 9000 servers, 250 mill subscribers, 4mill playing at anyone time.

Only 500 employees. How can he service all of these users?

He has created a platform, given them the tools, gives them rules, shaped the conversation

Most of the content is created by the users. There is a sort of stickiness between the players and the company.

Companies that are creating communities.

If only 1% of the users are content contributers, you have 2.5 million content creators (workforce)

Think of Education. There are xXx students in the US. If only 1% are co-producers, what would this do to the education content.

Turn User into Producers, Consumers into Designers
